New Tools To Adapt To The Virtual Learning Environment

One lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will be the way we use distance technology. We were thrown into using technology for conducting business and for teaching and learning.

For years, education innovators have been talking about moving to a “blended learning” environment. Blended learning takes the best of face-to-face interaction and connects it with technology-enabled learning.

Last year, NC3T developed the CareerSmart Classrooms System.  This suite of resources is available to all teachers and instructors in a middle school, high school, college, or adult education program. Considering some of the activities involved accessing online content, the resources were developed primarily for a classroom-based environment.

Then, COVID-19 happened just as we were putting final touches on the resources and the delivery system.

By August, we finalized the online delivery platform for all the resources. In Fall of 2020, we are converting all the resources for use in a 100% virtual learning environment.

This week, we delivered the first webinars for our user community to explain how Lesson 3.1 can be delivered entirely on a virtual meeting platform.  Lesson 3.1 takes students through the beginning of the career exploration process.  During the demonstration, we showed how Lesson 3.1 can be delivered using an online meeting platform. In this case, we used Zoom for breakout rooms, interactive Google Slides, a fun Google tool called JamBoard, and the chat box. The chat box is helpful to provide students with hot links so they can access and use a free online career interest assessment tool.
